Scared Money

From the Edgar-nominated author of The Night of the Dance, an ex-cop investigating a heist is drawn into drug bust alongside the local Texas sheriff. When the CIA comes knocking at ex-Texas Ranger Jeremiah Spur's door, asking for a favor, he's not that interested in helping. At least, not until the agent mentions that the man in need of help—Benjamin —requested Jeremiah specifically because he knew Jeremiah's father. Since Jeremiah hasn't seen his father since he was a little boy, this piques his interest, and he reluctantly agrees to travel from his ranch in the small town of Brenham, Texas to Austin in order to investigate the disappearance of an accountant, who has vanished along with $10 million of his boss's money. Deputy Sheriff Clyde Thomas—a black man in Brenham's rural Texas jurisdiction—is looking into the shooting deaths of a local drug dealer and his girlfriend. It seems unlikely that Captain Spur's case and Deputy Thomas's case are related. But in all things criminal, even in sleepy Brenham, Texas, things are rarely what they seem. Scared Money is the second book to feature Jeremiah and Clyde, after James Himes' Edgar Award-nominated novel, The Night of the Dance. "There's a new sheriff in town when it comes to Texas crime writing, and his name is James Hime." —Harlan Coben, #1 New York Times–bestselling author of Gone Before Goodbye "Hime sets 'em up and knocks 'em down with élan in this edgy thriller." —Texas Monthly
