The Barbarians: After Victory Comes Betrayal

War has ended, but Giulion Geoffrey’s real danger begins after the guns fall silent. Betrayed by one of his own and left for dead, he wakes injured, dispossessed, and suddenly invisible in a world already dividing the spoils. The land that was his birthright is being claimed by others, and the code that once protected him no longer applies.

His unlikely rescuer is Hodd Savage—the feared Barbarian general he was moments from killing. Practical, calm, and unsettlingly perceptive, Savage understands what victory really means once alliances fracture. As the two men move through a collapsing order of nobles, raiders, and frontier clans, Geoffrey is forced to confront how thin the line is between civilization and the systems it pretends to condemn.

The Barbarians is tense, grounded science fiction built on personal stakes rather than spectacle. Its conflicts unfold through choices made under pressure, where loyalty shifts and survival depends on reading people as carefully as terrain. Budrys strips away romantic ideas of honor and replaces them with something sharper: competence, adaptability, and the willingness to act when rules fail.

Algis Budrys was one of science fiction’s most incisive voices, publishing influential stories in magazines such as Astounding Science Fiction, Galaxy, and The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. His fiction is known for examining power structures, cultural collapse, and the psychology of leadership under stress. “The Barbarians” reflects Budrys’s talent for embedding large social questions inside immediate human decisions, making the story feel as relevant now as when it first appeared.
