"Two on a Tower" is a novel by Thomas Hardy, first published in 1882. Set in rural England during the 19th century, the story revolves around the unconventional romance between Lady Constantine, a young widow of nobility, and Swithin St. Cleeve, an amateur astronomer and tenant farmer. Despite the vast differences in their social status and age, Lady Constantine and Swithin form a deep and passionate connection as they explore their shared interests in astronomy and scientific discovery. However, their budding relationship faces numerous obstacles, including societal expectations, family opposition, and personal ambitions. Against the backdrop of the picturesque landscape of Wessex, Hardy delves into themes of love, ambition, duty, and the clash between tradition and modernity. With its lyrical prose and poignant characterizations, "Two on a Tower" is a timeless exploration of the complexities of human relationships and the pursuit of happiness.
