"Xingu" is a witty and satirical short story written by Edith Wharton, a prominent American novelist and Pulitzer Prize winner. The story revolves around a group of sophisticated women belonging to the Ladies' Literary Society of a fictional town called "Xingu." As the ladies gather to discuss literature, they strive to impress the distinguished guest, Osric Dane, a well-known author. However, the ladies' attempts at intellectual discourse often lead to humorous and embarrassing situations, showcasing the pretentiousness and shallowness of their literary pursuits. Wharton's sharp wit and keen observation of social interactions make "Xingu" a delightful critique of cultural pretensions and the clash between high society and intellectual aspirations. This short story remains an entertaining and thought-provoking examination of human nature and the dynamics of social gatherings.
