Hints On Beagling

How to build a pack of hounds and hunt it on foot, written in 1929 by a Master who had done exactly that.

John Pawle, Master of the Widford Beagles, wrote Hints On Beagling for the man thinking of starting his own pack. It is short, practical and entirely unsentimental. He sets out the country you need, the kennels and how to manage them, the hound itself, the huntsman and his whippers-in, and the hunting day as it was run between the wars, when a pack and a pair of stout boots were all that stood between a man and a winter afternoon.

Beagling is the oldest form of hunting on foot in England, and this is one of the clearest accounts of its working practice, reprinted from the original text and artwork.

This edition features:

• The complete 1929 text, from choosing your country to the running of a hunting day • Kennel management, hound care and pack discipline as practised between the wars • The huntsman and his whippers-in, and the making of a young hound • Written by a serving Master of Beagles, for anyone starting a pack of their own
