#1 Pope Pius XII decided to solve the Vatican’s mystery of what was buried beneath the high altar of the basilica bearing Peter’s name. He believed that Peter’s bones might be buried there.

#2 The house at 8 Prinz-Albrecht-Strasse, Berlin, had once been an art school. It was the most feared address in Germany, as it was the home of Heinrich Himmler, Reichsführer of the Schutzstaffel, Hitler’s terror corps.

#3 Pius the Eleventh, the Pope from 1929 to 1958, was very pro-German and known for his excellent knowledge of the German language. He signed a concordat with Hitler in 1933, funding the Church with annual tax revenues of 500 million marks.

#4 On 5 March, Pius XI picked up the phone and told his most trusted aide, Father Robert Leiber, that he was waiting. Leiber was a Jesuit priest who had no title, and he knew how to keep his mouth shut.
