#1 My fifth winter, I had mastered the skill of riding a sled on my own. With luck and good fortune, December of 1927 in Preussisch Holland was filled with snow beyond the imagination. I had finally discovered the competing wonders of independence and daring.

#2 When I was ten, I had a sled that I shared with my friends. We would race down the hill, and I would always win. The sled was my favorite Christmas gift, and I spent many winters with it.

#3 By 1941, war had turned our worlds upside down. Our families were now enemies. I had fled to Scotland and joined the British Army, while Ruth and her parents stayed in Elbing and served as German soldiers.

#4 I learned about my father’s sled when I became a grandparent. He had used it in East Prussia in 1927, and I guess he was feeling sentimental as we walked along the beach. I never thought to ask where or when he learned to sled.
