#1 I was jumpmaster on a flight in 2010 where the cargo door was open, and I couldn’t hear myself think over the roar of the rotors. I looked down at Butte, my hometown, and thought about who I was going to kill that night.

#2 Butte, Montana, is a mining town that was built on top of a toxic waste site. It was the richest hill on earth because of the mines, but later it was copper that made Butte famous.

#3 I always knew there was something else out there. I had to get to Great Lakes, Illinois, to see other scared kids just like me and realize that everyone is pretty much the same.

#4 When I brought my squadron to my hometown for a training mission in 2010, I sold it as a high-altitude skydiving trip for about a dozen of us. Butte is already a mile above sea level, so by the time you’re in the CH-47, you’re about three miles up.
