However, Karen knew the truth, which she took with her when she and Loralei fled Slaughter for greener pastures. But now, Loralei was a young adult with questions about the identity of her birth father. Something her mother vowed never to divulge.

So when Loralei returned to what used to be Slaughter and moved into the ramshackle eyesore that had been Old Lady Ketchel’s home, residents became nervous. It had stood vacant and neglected for a quarter of a century. Not because the townspeople hadn’t thought to bulldoze it and create a nice, quiet green space. It’s just that every time a demolition crew stepped foot onto the property, some tragedy would befall them.
