Polymer chemistry is a dynamic and essential branch of chemistry that focuses on the synthesis, characterization, and properties of polymers. Staudinger proposed that macromolecules were long chains of repeating units, a revolutionary idea that earned him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1953. Polymers can be broadly classified into several categories based on their origin and structure. Natural polymers such as cellulose, proteins, and DNA occur in biological systems and are essential to life processes. Synthetic polymers, including polyethylene, polystyrene, and nylon, are man-made and have become fundamental materials in industrial and consumer products. Polymers are also categorized as thermoplastics, which soften when heated and can be reshaped, or thermosets, which form irreversible bonds during curing and maintain their shape under heat.
