Structure Weld Quality Level is a systematic approach for evaluating and controlling the quality of welded structural joints, particularly in railway bridges and dynamically loaded steel structures. The study focuses on the relationship between weld configuration, fatigue loading, stress concentration, workmanship, welding procedure, inspection, and structural service performance.

Because railway bridge members experience repeated loading and significant stress ranges, fatigue becomes an important consideration. The quality of a welded connection therefore depends not only on whether the weld is free from defects, but also on its joint geometry, penetration, weld profile, surface finish, location relative to the principal stress, start–stop conditions, backing arrangement, fit-up, and notch effect.
