After the horrors of World War One, disillusioned army chaplain John Elliot arrives at Hern Hall, an isolated estate in the mist-shrouded English countryside. The mystery of the estate's tragic past seems to linger in the shadows when John catches a glimpse of a drowned child's face beneath the dark waters of the lake. Though he suffers from shell shock, John is determined to keep a promise he made to his friend Will, who died in the trenches while saving John's life. Invited by Lord and Lady Chiddingstone to stay as a guest at Hern Hall, John experiences a series of unsettling and eerie events, including attending a seance led by the infamous spiritualist medium, Madame Blanche, whom Lady Chiddingstone hopes can communicate with her dead sons. As John grows closer to the family, he uncovers more about their traumatic past and the disturbing secrets hidden within the walls and tunnels of Hern Hall.
