#1 Datt was a midwife, and he delivered Mem’s baby. He had plans to move to Minnesota with his family, and he enticed Mem with stories about the dark, rich soil and fresh water.

#2 Datt and I had secured a job on an English farm, milking cows and feeding pigs, in exchange for room and board. Our new landlords, Ted and his wife Lita, came to pick us up at the train station.

#3 Mem and Datt went to see Gma the next day. Datt was worried about the baby, but Mem was more concerned about how Lizzie was affecting their relationship.

#4 We moved into a small, wood frame, two-story house with a tin roof in 1975. The first floor was separated into four rooms: the mudroom, kitchen, living room, and Mem and Datt’s bedroom. A cast-iron register allowed heat to rise through the floorboards.
