Voltaire

François-Marie Arouet, known to history as Voltaire, was one of the most influential writers and thinkers of the Enlightenment. Born in Paris in 1694, he became a playwright, historian, philosopher, satirist, and public intellectual whose works helped shape the intellectual foundations of the modern world. Through wit, scholarship, and relentless criticism, Voltaire challenged intolerance, superstition, censorship, and the abuse of political and religious power.

His life was as remarkable as his writings. He was imprisoned in the Bastille, exiled from France, welcomed in the courts of Europe, and admired by monarchs, scholars, and reformers alike. Despite official opposition and repeated attempts to silence him, his books circulated across the continent, influencing public debate on religion, civil liberties, justice, and human rights. Voltaire's literary legacy includes philosophical tales such as Candide, historical studies, essays, letters, plays, and countless polemical works. His writing combined clarity, intelligence, and humor with a determination to expose hypocrisy and defend reason. Few authors have left such a lasting imprint on European thought or contributed more to the development of modern secular and democratic ideas.

This biography traces Voltaire's extraordinary journey from an ambitious young writer to one of the defining voices of the eighteenth century. Drawing upon historical records, correspondence, and contemporary accounts, it explores the achievements, controversies, and enduring influence of a man whose ideas helped transform the intellectual landscape of the Western world. More than two centuries after his death, Voltaire remains a symbol of free inquiry, critical thinking, and the power of the written word.
