In a timely update of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, National Book Award finalist Ibi Zoboi skillfully balances cultural identity, class, and gentrification against the heady magic of first love in her vibrant reimagining of this beloved classic. A smart, funny, gorgeous retelling starring all characters of color.
Don't miss the audiobook, read by Elizabeth Acevedo, the beloved author and narrator of The Poet X, winner of an Odyssey Honor and an AudioFile Earphones Award winner.
Zuri Benitez has pride. Brooklyn pride, family pride, and pride in her Afro-Latino roots. But pride might not be enough to save her rapidly gentrifying neighborhood from becoming unrecognizable.
When the wealthy Darcy family moves in across the street, Zuri wants nothing to do with their two teenage sons, even as her older sister, Janae, starts to fall for the charming Ainsley. She especially can’t stand the judgmental and arrogant Darius. Yet as Zuri and Darius are forced to find common ground, their initial dislike shifts into an unexpected understanding.
But with four wild sisters pulling her in different directions, cute boy Warren vying for her attention, and college applications hovering on the horizon, Zuri fights to find her place in Bushwick’s changing landscape, or lose it all.
Ibi Zoboi's Pride is a strong option for summer reading and for sharing in a classroom or for homeschooling.

The two stars are solely to the voice actress who did a remarkable job.The author has added no value to the already unpredictable storyline. There is only one perspective and I’m going to call her poor-resentful-girl for the rest of the review because that was all she was. I felt like she was less concerned about what she could achieve in life and more about the unfairness of others who already had. The book’s name should be Prejudice and not Pride because poor-resentful-girl is only biased against everyone who doesn’t belong to her immediate community and sees zero faults in herself. She is whiny and angsty and entitled. None of her drama is justified. Other characters that she comes in contact with are flat and one dimensional, including Darcy. There is no chemistry between the two. Some of the most important moments from the original classic happen so quickly and without punch, that they almost don’t matter.I did enjoy the random poetries in between.
