When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock.
Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty facade is a town at war.
Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils... Pagford is not what it first seems.
And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?
A big novel about a small town, The Casual Vacancy is J.K. Rowling's first novel for adults. It is the work of a storyteller like no other.

First of everything, I wish my three star review wouldn't give an impression that (I thought) the book is mediocre or something like that. No. The book is a fantastic portrayal of a small town, true to itself, mostly realistic, and submitting complex - just like real life. At some chapters Ms Rowling had outdone herself, simplicity being her ally to give us glimpses of largely rueful lives. This is a fantastic book, and I hugged it to my heart, and felt the vacancy in my heart when it was done - the feeling of leaving Pagford has knotted my stomach. Just like Gaya, who understands the beauty of Pagford in its simplicity and country style, I too found it: within its all gloomy, gritty, and grumpy citizens, the town of Pagford got a profound loveliness one cannot escape to love. May be it is the freedom it unknowingly offeres to everyone to feel to the fullest. Anyway, I would suggest the read to anyone who likes to simply get lost in a town, not looking for anything in specific.
