#1 The I-myth is the greatest lie ever told, and yet practically every person on earth believes that they are real. They believe that there is some me or I who is the center of their experience. But this fact doesn’t inhibit their ability to recall memories, share stories with friends, or function as though they were the same person.

#2 The belief in a central I is a useful tool to help us avoid harm and navigate social interactions, as long as we don’t mistake it for a real entity. The individual identity, the belief in some sort of intrinsic I, arises and evolves in the same way.
