Summary of Julian Baggini's The Edge of Reason

#1 The first part of the book will focus on the use of reason in religion and science. In these and other domains, there is an ineliminable role of judgement, but that does not mean we should be skeptical about reason and rationality.

#2 The debate between God and science is another example of how theism and atheism rarely change their minds. The currency of philosophy of religion is supposed to be rational argument, but it can’t buy an opposing position at any price.

#3 The big arguments carry weight. When it comes to the big issues, it’s the big arguments that carry weight. And intellectuals do not like to admit this because it brings them down to the same level as simpler people, like Homer Simpson.

#4 The central fact about the worship was blindingly obvious: the Holy Spirit was not at work at all. It was all people’s doing. The reality of God is obvious to some believers because it feels or seems obvious, and no one other than the believer is required to verify its obviousness.
