Audrey Hepburn, born Audrey Kathleen Ruston, was a British actress and humanitarian recognized as a film and fashion icon. Audrey Hepburn's father, Joseph Victor Anthony Ruston, changed his surname to Hepburn-Ruston because he mistakenly believed he was descended from James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell. He may have done this at the insistence of Audrey's mother in order to appear more aristocratic.

In the mid-1930s, Audrey's parents were involved with the British Union of Fascists, with her mother even meeting Adolf Hitler and writing favorably about him. However, her mother's views changed after her uncle was executed for resistance activities in 1942.

During the German occupation of the Netherlands, Audrey used the name Edda van Heemstra because her English-sounding name was considered dangerous. She also gave silent dance performances that raised money for the Dutch resistance.
