Kobayashi Issa (1763-1828) was a renowned Edo-period haiku poet known for his deeply personal and empathetic style. Though he faced many personal hardships, Issa is now celebrated as one of Japan’s greatest haiku masters, alongside Basho, Buson, and Shiki.
