The Man Without a Body is a pioneering science-fiction tale first published in The New York Sun in 1877. The story follows a brilliant but impatient scientist who invents a machine capable of transmitting matter through space — but when he tests it on himself, only his head makes the journey. What begins as a bold experiment quickly becomes a darkly humorous and unsettling lesson in the limits of human control over technology. Long before teleportation was a common idea in fiction, Mitchell explored it with a mix of curiosity, irony, and quiet horror.

The story feels modern in its themes: the danger of rushing scientific progress, the arrogance of invention without foresight, and the human cost of treating the body as just another machine. At the same time, its tone is playful, filled with dry wit and newspaper-style realism. It’s one of those rare early works that show how speculative ideas were taking shape decades before the “Golden Age” of sci-fi.

Edward Page Mitchell (1852–1927) was an American journalist and editor best known for his work at The New York Sun, where many of his early science-fiction stories first appeared anonymously. Long before writers like H. G. Wells and Jules Verne became household names, Mitchell was publishing stories about time travel, faster-than-light communication, cyborgs, matter transmission, and even invisibility. Because most of his tales ran without bylines, his influence went largely unrecognized until the 1970s, when scholars rediscovered his work.

Mitchell never thought of himself as a science-fiction author — he wrote these pieces as imaginative newspaper entertainment — yet he helped invent many of the genre’s core ideas. Today he is considered one of the forgotten founders of American speculative fiction, a writer whose playful imagination opened doors that later giants would walk through.
