The 1980s witnessed a sea change in the academic, philosophical study of Christian doctrines following on the heels of a renewal in philosophy of religion. At the turn of the second millennium, interest in the analysis of Christian doctrine has only matured. Interactions between analytic philosophers and systematic theologians eventuated the rise of Analytic Theology now equipped with the tools and methods of analytic philosophy. This exchange was initiated by such prominent figures as Alvin Plantinga, Marilyn McCord Adams, William P. Alston, Eleonore Stump, and Nicholas Wolterstorff. Today we see a maturing and diversification of the approach, exploring a range of theological loci and problems. "Analyzing Theology" is a series of monographs in Christian theology that will be useful to the guild as well as to the student of theology. Tapping the talent of both established and newer scholars, the monographs in the series will explore cutting edge questions in analytic and systematic theology in a manner relevant to communities that have an expressly theologically informed identity. Analytic Theology is an emerging methodology that draws from the tools and methods of contemporary analytic philosophy to serve the ends of constructive systematic theology. Those methods make use of contemporary logical and conceptual analysis, emphasize the virtues of clarity and concision (as employed within the analytic philosophical tradition), and typically include a commitment to the objectivity of truth, goodness, justice, and rationality.
