The Avengers are a team of fictional superheroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), founded by Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D.. The original team consisted of Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye. The Avengers' purpose is to defend Earth from global threats and have operated primarily in New York. They were assembled for the first time in 2012 during the Battle of New York. Over time, the team expanded to include 16 members. They faced numerous threats, including Loki, Ultron, and Thanos.
