Children of Virtue and Vengeance is the breathtaking second title in Tomi Adeyemi's YA fantasy trilogy, Legacy of Orïsha, following her ground-breaking, West African-inspired debut Children of Blood and Bone.
After battling the impossible, Zélie and Amari have finally succeeded in bringing magic back to the land of Orïsha. But the ritual was more powerful than they imagined, reigniting the powers of not only the maji but also some nobles with magic ancestry.
Now, Zélie struggles to unite the maji in an Orïsha where the enemy is just as strong and magical as they are. When Amari's mother forms an army of royals with newly awakened powers, Zélie fights to secure Amari's right to the throne and protect the new maji from the monarchy's wrath.
But with civil war looming on the horizon, Zélie finds herself at a breaking point: she must find a way to bring the kingdom together or watch as Orïsha tears itself apart.

The story doesn't come across as particularly well thought-out. None of the characters ever plans more than 1 step ahead. They always just think: "eliminate this one obstacle and all our problems will be solved". And then they spend several chapters crying when their 'plan' blows up in their face. The Iyika for example claim to stage a revolution, yet don't have any plan for after they defeat the monarchy. Then there's the allegorical reference to the racial tensions in American society that the author herself pointed to at the end of the first book. Yes she definitely captured the pain associated with them, but that is also where the allegory stops. Take it any further and the underlying message of the books quickly becomes very strange. There's no message of forgiveness, no message of working together for a better future. Each side just tries to exterminate the other.

Excellent narrator - that was the reason I kept listening! The story is repetitive and predictable, it gets annoying but oh-that-voice-acting! Excellent and makes it worth it.

Dit boek krijgt 4 sterren, omdat i
