A disappointing book after having enjoyed reading If Women Rose Rooted and The Enchanted Life. Right in the introduction she reduces women to a feeling men can have: “for all those who identify as women” thereby excluding women who don’t believe gender identity has any rational basis ánd losing the opportunity to write in a meaningful way how our sex is the characteristic that makes us targets for sexism. Older women are vilified in a way older men are not. This has nothing to do with some “womanly inner feeling”. Older men who claim to be women get mostly praise (no accomplishment necessary, reducing women to sexist stereotypes will do) while older women get demonized for not conforming to rigid social constructs of femininity. She sort of tried to explore and tackle this issue but failed in my eyes. Victoria Smith’s book Hags was so much better on this topic.
