Niet zo goed verslag van de tocht van de Donner party. Er wordt niet echt ingegaan de achtergrond van de verschillende gebeurtenissen. Waarom koos de Donner party voor Hastings cut off? Het boek is geschreven aan de hand van dagboeken en andere verslagen van de deelnemers van de Donner party, dit maakt het boek subjectief. De Donners hebben verschillende (dodelijke) vergissingen begaan, maar in het boek is hiervan niets terug te vinden. De tocht is heel zwaar, maar daar blijft het bij.
