The pioneer of romantic suspense, Mary Stewart leads listeners on a thrilling journey through a dangerous and deadly Provence in this tale perfect for fans of Agatha Christie and Barbara Pym.
It sounds idyllic: a leisurely drive through the sun-drenched landscape of Provence. But Charity's dream holiday turns into a nightmare when she becomes embroiled in a sinister plot to kidnap a young boy. She soon finds herself in a deadly pursuit and must uncover who to trust … and who to fall for.
Whenever I look back now on the strange and terrifying events of that holiday in Southern France, I remember the minutes I spent gazing at the golden arches of the Roman aqueduct over the Gardon… the last brief lull before the thunder.

Points for general plot and writing style. Stuff that bothered me: 1) it takes a long time before you know in what time the story takes place. Knowing the year would have helped with being drawn into the story. 2) When Charity is driving, they always talk in the we-form: we drove there, we stopped,... as if the car is its own person. This is maybe the writing style from 60 years ago, but it bothered me anyway. 3) SPOILER ALERT: the complete impossibleness of the chase, when Richard keeps finding Charity. Come on. They are driving through the South of France, through villages and cities, and everywhere (without any effort from his side), Richard just bumps into her? And why for the love of God doesn't she just turn the car around and drives back to Avignon when she was able to hide and let him pass? This doesn't make sense at it makes my skin crawl. 4) She is SO afraid of R., thinking he is a murderer, being chased all day, and just like that, they are kissing and he loves her? Nope.
