    Mary Kubeka has become somewhat synonymous with writing novels where the main female character suffers some form of mental disconnect (usually induced by an external factor) in a mysterious murder scenario. "When the light go out," though written in first person,is written in a POV-style alternating between two women some year apart. The older woman suffers from obsession and hateful envy in consequence of her husband and her not being able to have children. The younger women, in turn, suffer from an obsession to ascertain the identity of her father triggered by the loss of her mother. The obsession and grief combination results in extended insomnia, which in turn leads to paranoid delusions. Though Kubica is known for psychological whodunits, this is a psychological drama. The mental aspects of the novel are very well depicted and developed. The problem is that Kubeka tends to develop her characters more as a vehicle to carry the plot. She does not create characters in a way
