In a famine-stricken village on a dusty plain, a seer shows two children their fates. For a family’s eighth-born son, there’s greatness. For the second daughter, nothing.
In 1345, China lies restless under harsh Mongol rule. And when a bandit raid wipes out their home, the two children must somehow survive. Zhu Chongba despairs and gives in. But the girl resolves to overcome her destiny. So she takes her dead brother’s identity and begins her journey. Can Zhu escape what’s written in the stars, as rebellion sweeps the land? Or can she claim her brother’s greatness – and rise as high as she can dream?
This is a glorious tale of love, loss, betrayal and triumph by a powerful new voice.
‘As brilliant as Circe . . . a deft and dazzling triumph’ – Tasha Suri, author of The Jasmine Throne
‘Epic, tragic and gorgeous’ – Alix E. Harrow, author of The Ten Thousand Doors of January

Ongetwijfeld een prachtig boek, maar als luisterboek heel lastig te volgen. Opgegeven na 8 uur en 800x terugspoelen.

Narrator is frankly amazing. The story is gripping, truthful and sometimes quite confronting. It is deep and nuanced and you are both rooting for someone and knowing how cruel they can be. Really embraces the complexity of human emotion and existence and also reminds me sometimes of "the art of not giving a fucking" and choosing what you suffer for. And ofc I love the historical aspect. All in all, great book, loved it. Will read the sequel.

Absoluut geen mix tussen Mulan en The Song of Achilles. Eerder vergelijkbaar met The Poppy War. Dit boek was helaas niks voor mij. Begon goed maar kakte snel in en werd vervolgens ook niet beter.

I loved it! Extremely enjoyable. Low-magic fantasy retelling of Chinese history with some very unexpected, very queer twists. It's very impressive writing lead character who is compelling and sympathetic but also kind of awful.

It was a gripping read, though towards the middle the constant discussion of fate got a bit repetitive and tedious. Loved the portrayals of queernes and considerations of identity. I also think it's an accurate portrayal of people who rise to power: they only have their own interests at heart, not of the people who become their subjects/people who they represent. This has been true since the beginning of time and is true now.Great narration!I feel like the people saying that it was hard to follow because of the names are borderline (or not) racist, it was really not that hard. Not any different than any other book with a lot of political intrigue and several plot lines in this respect.
