We've seen naval and infantry perspective on the Napoleonic Wars so it's high time we got a one from cavalry (wait, there's artillery still to go). A very compelling narrative, made seemingly realistic by providing much detail into technical aspects of working with horses. Horses are often just like cars in historical fiction, here they are unique and imperfect, they get ill, they respond to their riders and the din of battle, they play their roles.Storytelling is very engaging but at the same time the whole story felt somewhat ill arranged: a series of many adventures, yet without much sense of tension build-up and satisfactory release. The battle of Waterloo felt like random chaotic shambles. Perhaps it served well to get a glimpse of chaos and lack of information on the historic battlefield but certainly you don't get the feeling it was a "close-run thing", it appeared rather quite an easy victory until the hideous aftermath was revealed. Hervey seems a but dull but likeable.
