The helicopter heist

In the summer of 1997, Swedish financiers Peter Mattson and Thomas Jisander lived it up on a luxurious yacht in Saint Tropez, blowing millions on extravagant parties and luxury shopping sprees. Little did the world know, their source of wealth was one of Sweden's biggest financial scams. They had manipulated the acquisition of Trustor, a major investment company, using the company's own funds—totaling around 600 million Swedish crowns (approximately 53 million U.S. dollars) The Trustor affair remains a notorious example of white-collar crime in Sweden, marked by its audacity and the dramatic courtroom twists that followed.

On August 23, a man disguised in a wig stormed into Kreditbanken at Norrmalmstorg, Stockholm, firing shots and taking hostages. His demands: money, the release of his imprisoned friend, and an escape vehicle. As millions watched, what unfolded was not just a hostage drama but the birth of a psychological phenomenon known globally today as "Stockholm Syndrome," where hostages form a bond with their captor. This event not only captivated Sweden but also sparked a worldwide fascination with the complex dynamics of hostage situations, leaving a lasting imprint on popular culture and psychological studies.
