I'm curious how an author who had clearly done some research didn't notice the fact, that swords used in the islamicate world of that time were, as a rule, straight, and couldn't therefore be "commonly curved". "Leather jerkins" everybody seems to be wearing, in turn, were invented 500 years after the era this novel is set in, and unlike the common curved sword error it's ALWAYS brought up in criticisms of popcultural depictions of middle ages.I'm also not aware of any sources claiming punching holes in helmets was something done ever, not to mention in this specific period and location, but licentia poetica (in prose...) I guess
