Ex-cop Vance Courage is heading off for an island vacation when HIPP Corp’s CEO Sherry Rogers jets into Miami for a surprise meeting. But before dinner is served, Rogers tells him another doctor-client in Chicago lost a cancer patient in almost the exact same way. Could the link be a bad batch of drugs? Or something more nefarious?

With a freak late April snowstorm looming, they detour to the Windy City, shocked to discover the clinic is a front for a patient-dumping scheme. While Vance focuses on the Chicago doc treating low-income patients, Lauren heads off to meet with Rogers—and vanishes. When the sixth patient dies and the Chicago oncologist is arrested for murder, every cell in Vance’s body tells him he has a lot more to lose than money.

Vance Courage and Lauren Gold are on route to Paradise Island, Bahamas to gamble when the twin-engine prop plane they’ve chartered is forced to make an emergency landing on a tiny private island. The pilot, a crusty army veteran named Blade, makes a harrowing landing then orders his five passengers to take their baggage and walk to the island’s only resort to wait for the weather to clear. While Vance is away from the table, Lauren sees the plane take off into the sunset, stranding them and two of the three other passengers.

Courage soon realizes his is the only missing baggage. He hurries to the footpath leading to the small runway and finds his belongings strewn on the gravel in the clearing.
