Book Preview:

#1 The summer before my fortieth birthday, I was with friends on Folkestone beach, which juts into the English Channel as if reaching out to France. I snapped the seaside town bathed in the warmth of an Indian summer.

#2 I was there for the surgeon to explain the extent of the infection with something approaching awe. I was there to fret over H’s temperature refusing to fall, his blood oxygen levels failing to return to normal. I helped him take slow walks around the ward.

#3 I had just published my first book in six years, and I had another imminent deadline. I was already stretching everyone’s patience, and I had no one else to turn to. Something had already shifted in my life, and this was just another part of its wake.

#4 We all have a season of wintering at some point in our lives. It is a period of cold when we’re cut off from the world, feeling rejected, sidelined, or blocked from progress. It can be a result of an illness or a life event such as a bereavement or the birth of a child.
