Vid 16 års ålder deporterades hon till Auschwitz tillsammans med sin familj. Efter kriget flyttade hon till Tjeckoslovakien där hon träffade sin blivande man. 1949 flyttade de till USA och 1969 utexaminerades hon som psykolog från University of Texas. Däref- ter gjorde hon sin doktorandpraktik vid ett militärsjukhus och specialiserade sig på posttraumatisk stress. Sedan många år har hon en egen praktik i Kalifornien och är verksam vid University of California i San Diego.
Hon har skrivit många böcker och är en populär föreläsare.
