The North American edition of a 2009 story collection by a trans Asian-Australian author that received a great deal of attention and awards recognition. While not explicitly “trans” (the author does not use that term to describe himself), the stories are a series of fantastical explorations of transformation and identity, in which the narrator shape-shifts through different genders, races, and identities, many of which are rooted in popular culture, from Godzilla to Whitney Houston’s bodyguard. Tom first came to our attention this year through his self-supported North American tour during which he gave acclaimed readings throughout the US and Canada. He is in the process of applying to immigrate to Canada. Arsenal is well known for its list of gender and trans titles, including the works of Ivan E. Coyote, S. Bear Bergman, and Rae Spoon. While principally a work of fiction, the book could also be included among books of interest to gender studies and LGBT studies. Non-traditional market: LGBT accounts; academic market (gender studies, LGBT studies).
