#1 I was promoted to four-star general and given command of the Army’s Forces Command in Georgia. I had command of all the deployable Army forces in the United States, including the Army Reserve, and I supervised the training of the Army National Guard.

#2 The rule of optimism is that you must believe that things will get better, no matter how difficult the situation may seem. You must convey that attitude to your followers, so that they can believe that you can solve any problem.

#3 Everyone gets mad. It is a natural and healthy emotion. You get mad at your kids, your spouse, your best friends, your opponents. But staying mad isn’t useful. I experienced this when Dominique de Villepin, the French foreign minister, made me mad by opposing us in the UN Security Council regarding the Iraq War.

#4 I have learned over the years that when I get mad, I get over it quickly and never lose control of myself. I have worked hard to make sure that when I get mad, I get over it quickly and never lose control of myself.
