Although now beloved and revered by millions as the greatest composer who ever lived, Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) was best known in his lifetime as an organist, and was eclipsed in fame as a composer by two of his twenty children. For the last twenty seven years of his life he was a schoolteacher and choir director whose duties extended to meal supervision and dormitory inspection. Yet throughout his career he composed a vast body of music which is amongst the most joyful, dancing and enrapturing ever written. This portrait in sound includes many examples of the music that made him immortal. With compelling narration by Jeremy Siepmann, character portrayals by acclaimed actors, and the interpolation of over twenty five substantial musical extracts reflecting the development of one of music’s most enduringly awe inspiring composers, we are transported back three centuries straight into the life of Johann Sebastian Bach. This innovative sense of immediacy is at the heart of this comprehensive audio biography, depicting the life of a composer whose music is universally admired.

Father Bach. The man of a genius beyond comparison, with a life unbelievably ordinary. If fathering and caring for twenty children ever can be said to be ordinary. But handicraft driven to heights only dreamed of, will become art of the craftsman is intelligent and talenter enough. Bach was indeed all of that. This suite of popular biographies on composers is one of the best I have come across, and this one is the least interesting one, simply because the life of J. S. Bach isn't that interesting. His music is, on the other hand, one of a few things that surprisingly often is mentioned as the direct reason for people becoming believers in God. He was indeed the fifth evangelist. Bach should be played and listened to, not talked or written about. Why five stars? Because what words can't say, the music included says. This is a great way where to learn to know Johann Sebastian Bach. When you have reached the end, open YouTube and search for "Bach Kathleen Ferrier" or "Bach Dinu Lipatti" and listen to old recordings by artists dead far too early, but whom together with Father Bach left behind little pieces of Paradise and love of life both temporal and eternal. There is no way to get closer to God, still being here on Earth. I consider Bach's music to be one of the most important parts in my life, defining and deciding things in a way which can't be compared with anything else. Learn to know it, that's the only thing I can say. If you are able to understand the width of what it says, and the depth of what it cries, laughs, rejoices and points out, you will begin a journey which Will not end in this life. There is nothing like it, nothing on Earth.
