Beowulf is the earliest surviving epic poem in Old English literature, composed between the 8th and 11th centuries. Set in Scandinavia, the poem tells the story of the hero Beowulf, a warrior of the Geats who travels to Denmark to help King Hrothgar. Hrothgar's great hall, Heorot, has been terrorized by the monstrous Grendel, who attacks the warriors at night. Beowulf confronts Grendel in a fierce battle and defeats him with his bare hands. Soon after, Grendel's mother seeks revenge, and Beowulf descends into her underwater lair to slay her as well. Victorious, he returns home and eventually becomes king of the Geats, ruling wisely for fifty years. In his old age, Beowulf faces his final challenge: a dragon enraged by the theft of its treasure. Though he kills the dragon, he is mortally wounded in the struggle. His people mourn him deeply, honoring his courage and leadership. Blending pagan heroism with Christian reflection, Beowulf explores themes of fate, loyalty, honor, and mortality, standing as a foundational work of English literary tradition.
