Set in Middlemarch, a fictional English Midland town in 1829 to 1832, the novel touches on a wide range of issues, from the status of women and the nature of marriage to religion, political reform, and education.

Middlemarch by George Eliot, pseudonym for Mary Anne Evans, was named as the greatest British novel of all time by BBC in 2015.
