"Oedipus Rex by Sophocles is one of the most powerful tragedies of classical Greek drama. The play tells the story of Oedipus, King of Thebes, who is determined to rid his city of a devastating plague. The oracle reveals that the plague is a punishment for the unresolved murder of the former king, Laius. Driven by a fierce commitment to justice and truth, Oedipus vows to uncover the criminal responsible, unaware that he himself stands at the center of the mystery.
As the investigation unfolds, clues accumulate with relentless inevitability. Oedipus gradually discovers that he has unknowingly fulfilled a dreadful prophecy: he has killed his father and married his mother, Queen Jocasta. The revelation shatters his identity and sense of moral certainty. Jocasta takes her own life, and Oedipus, overwhelmed by guilt and horror, blinds himself and accepts exile.
Sophocles explores themes of fate versus free will, knowledge and blindness, pride and humility. The tragedy examines the limits of human understanding and the devastating consequences of seeking truth at any cost. Through its intense dramatic structure and psychological depth, Oedipus Rex remains a foundational work of Western literature and tragic art."
