Testing: The World Marked For Destruction

Hannibal Pryor should have been commanding one of the greatest ships in Sirius Sector. Instead, political fallout has reduced him to babysitting a survey mission over Rigel IV, a quiet planet selected for the first live test of a terrifying new weapon. The assignment feels like an insult until his instruments reveal the impossible — human life on a world scheduled to be erased.

What Pryor finds on the surface changes everything. Far from the crowded worlds and military rivalries of interstellar civilization, the settlers of Nevis have built a peaceful existence rooted in hard work, open land, and traditions abandoned centuries earlier. Their leader, the wise and stubborn Dominie, refuses to surrender the home his people carved from an alien wilderness. As the clock runs down and military commanders grow desperate to protect their careers, Pryor discovers that one forgotten colony may hold the fate of something far larger than a single planet.

Testing is one of Sam Merwin Jr.’s most memorable combinations of military science fiction and quiet human drama. The story moves from political maneuvering to looming catastrophe without losing sight of the people caught in the middle. Its final pages carry unusual emotional weight because the danger never feels distant or abstract. Every decision has immediate consequences.

Sam Merwin Jr. worked as both a science fiction writer and magazine editor during the explosive growth of the genre in the 1940s and 1950s. He edited Startling Stories and Thrilling Wonder Stories, two of the era’s most influential science fiction magazines, while also publishing fiction under his own name. Merwin wrote novels including House of Many Worlds and The White Widows, but his short fiction often carried the strongest emotional punch. Testing reflects his talent for mixing large interstellar ideas with ordinary people forced into impossible situations.
