That's a Nice Giraffe

Following his beautiful wife Margie's diagnosis of dementia (Alzheimer's disease) at the relatively tender age of sixty, Carey became an advocate for carers and the families of loved ones facing a similar diagnosis.

That's a Nice Giraffe is his first book—an honest, heartfelt account of love, loss, and endurance in the face of one of life's cruellest diseases. It tracks his experiences coping with Margie's short-term memory loss, her cognitive deterioration, and, later, her troubling behavioural and personality changes. This book covers the full spectrum of his experiences and raw emotions, commencing at the time of Margie's diagnosis through to the heart-wrenching decision to place Margie into full-time residential care.

While recognising that everyone's journey will be different, this book provides meaningful insight and wisdom for anyone wondering what might lie ahead. It is an inspiring, practical, and sometimes even funny companion for husbands, wives, children, friends, and relatives of a loved one diagnosed with dementia—especially younger‑onset dementia.
