The Inquisitor: Loyalty Under Examination

Conway Kroll is an Interrogator who prides himself on efficiency, obedience, and emotional distance. Day after day, prisoners enter the interrogation chamber and leave broken, their information neatly recorded and fed into the machinery of the State. It is a system that works flawlessly—until one man refuses to cooperate. No pleas, no bargains, no screams that turn into confessions. Just silence.

For the first time in his career, Kroll fails. And that failure follows him home. A single question, spoken by a dying prisoner, begins to unravel years of certainty. The interrogation chamber may be sealed behind steel doors, but doubt proves harder to contain. As the night wears on, Kroll is forced to confront something far more dangerous than rebellion: the possibility that obedience itself may be a crime.

The Inquisitor is one of Robert Silverberg’s most unsettling early stories, a tightly controlled examination of power, compliance, and what happens when systems built to enforce order turn inward. The horror here is not sudden or spectacular—it is procedural, methodical, and chillingly calm. Each scene tightens the pressure, leading toward a final reversal that feels both inevitable and merciless.

Robert Silverberg published this story during the explosive early phase of his career, when he was producing large volumes of short fiction for magazines such as Galaxy Science Fiction, If, and Amazing Stories. Although later celebrated for major novels like Dying Inside, Downward to the Earth, and Lord Valentine’s Castle, Silverberg’s shorter works from this period often deliver their impact with brutal precision. The Inquisitor stands as a stark example of his ability to compress moral catastrophe into a single day—and a single mistake.
