After the bloody battle of the Crimean War has finally ceased, Le Capitaine Jean-Claude du Mont, a French soldier, injured and alone, is rescued by a gypsy named Kataryna, who nurses him to recovery. Suffering from amnesia, Jean-Claude tries to piece together exactly who he is—but in the meantime he discovers he has fallen in love with the woman who saved his life.

As a token of his appreciation, Jean-Claude gives Kataryna his amber pendant, which has been in his family for years—and also has a mysterious origin and powers.

About the Author

Ed Rau has been writing since 1980. He wrote short stories for The Petaluma Post ( a readers’ monthly magazine distributed in Petaluma, California) from 2007 to 2010.

Now Rau has written novels including The Telling, The Watercolor, The Can of Peaches, and Out the Window.

He has been a real estate broker for 35 years. Now he enjoys spending his time studying history, reading and writing.
