Carmilla

The Sapphic love story that inspired Dracula, Carmilla is the bedrock of vampire literature in English. Laura lives a lonely and melancholic life deep in the forest, where she and her ailing father reside in an otherwise empty castle. When, one night, Carmilla crashes her carriage into view nearby, Laura’s life changes rapidly into something feverish and erotic. The relationship that develops between the two women forms the blueprint for the lesbian vampire trope in all the stories that follow. But as Laura becomes plagued with nightmares and starts displaying strange symptoms, the truth about Carmilla—and its implications—come into the light.
