Fun with English: An early draft of this book was called Fun with English, which aptly represents the joy of Hussain’s poetry. In the critical response to his last collection, nearly every review mentioned ‘play’ (or something similar): ‘inclusive poetic playfulness,’ ‘aerobatic gamesmanship,’ ‘the playfulness of discovering hidden alphabets.’ Hussain is fully leaning into his playful reputation.
