Empire of Pain is the story of a dynasty: a parable of 21st century greed.
'Magnificent... A masterpiece of storytelling' Craig Brown, Mail on Sunday 'Books of the Year'
‘Put simply, this book will make your blood boil . . . ‘ - John Carreyrou, author of Bad Blood
The gripping and shocking story of three generations of the Sackler family and their roles in the stories of Valium, Oxycontin and the opioid crisis.
The Sackler family is one of the richest in the world, and their name adorns the walls of many famous institutions – Harvard; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Oxford; the Louvre. The source of the family fortune was vague, until it emerged that the Sacklers were responsible for making and marketing Oxycontin, a blockbuster painkiller that was a catalyst for the opioid crisis – an international epidemic of drug addiction which has killed nearly half a million people.
In this masterpiece of narrative reporting and writing, award-winning journalist and host of the Wind of Change podcast Patrick Radden Keefe exhaustively documents the jaw-dropping and ferociously compelling reality.
Shortlisted for the 2021 Financial Times/McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award

This is a fascinating book, telling the story of 3 generations of greed, secrecy, denial of the Sackler family promoting addiction. The book is split into 3 parts: the 1st tells the origin story of the 3 Sackler brothers, the 2nd reviews the creation and fueling of the opioid crisis in USA with the aggressive selling of OxyContin, and the 3rd part the consequences, lawsuits, and how the rich people don’t have remorse, don’t admit anything and still manage to escape harsh consequences. This is a complicated story but the author made a great book of this, despite they were trying to intimidate him and all the years of tough research and investigation he put in this book. Ultimately, this book is about the pervasiveness of moral evil, indifference of the wealthy to the harm they cause, and the ways, in which the social systems and institutions enable to remove guilt and grant protection to the rich and powerful. I think more people should learn about the Sackler’s story

If you listen to only one book on this app, ever, make it this one!If I could, I'd give it 20 stars, despite the fact that it threw me in an ebsolute existential crysis.Infuriating, scary, disgusting, unbelievable, excruciating detail into a three generations of family of demons, and their friends, without any remorse.Makes you wonder in what world do we really live in. I have no words to describe this book further and the anxiety it caused + the obsession with which I wanted to finish it and the rabbit hole I fell into. But I urge you to read it.
