8. THE DESERTERS - SAHARA DESERT SERIES

Deep in the merciless heart of the Sahara, at the remote Fort Ney and scorching heat, the sadistic Sergeant Duparne oppress the men of the French Foreign Legion. Duparne’s cruelty knows no bounds, and the men, already broken by the unforgiving desert, are further humiliated and tortured daily. When the death of a comrade and the impending, brutal punishment of another become the last straw, the smouldering embers of rebellion ignite.

The South African Joos Janse, a man of courage and insight, decides enough is enough. Together with a handful of desperate comrades, he forges a daring plan to escape Duparne’s tyranny and the hell of Fort Ney. What follows is a nerve-racking escape, a desperate battle against time and superior odds, culminating in a bloody confrontation at the fort’s gates. But freedom in the desert is an illusion. The escapees now face the merciless Sahara, with the shadow of the feared Bormoen warriors looming ominously over them. To their shock, they discover that a far greater and deadlier threat lurks in the sand dunes. El Dowla’s massive army, poised to destroy Fort Ney at any moment.

Caught between saving the fort and the Bormoen’s revenge, Joos must make an almost impossible choice. His leadership is tested to the extreme as he devises a desperate, life-threatening plan to save not only his men but perhaps even the unsuspecting Fort Ney from certain doom. Will these mutineers become heroes, or will the desert and its secrets ultimately claim them? They risk everything in a struggle where survival is the only prize and betrayal means your certain demise.
