New Lands (Annotated): Enriched Edition. Astronomical Anomalies, Scientific Dogma, and Fortean Speculations on Unexplained Celestial Events

In New Lands (1923), Charles Fort turns his skeptical, mordantly comic attention to astronomy, meteorology, and the certainties of institutional science. As in The Book of the Damned, he assembles reports of unexplained lights, wandering planets, strange falls, eclipses, and celestial anomalies, not to establish a single alternative system but to unsettle the reader's confidence in official explanation. Its style is aphoristic, digressive, and densely allusive, poised between scientific satire, philosophical provocation, and proto-Fortean cataloguing. Fort, born in Albany, New York, in 1874, was a journalist, fiction writer, and independent researcher whose life's work emerged from long study in libraries, especially the British Museum and New York Public Library. Alienated from dogmatism in both religion and science, he cultivated a method of collecting "damned" facts—observations excluded because they did not fit reigning theories. New Lands reflects his fascination with astronomy and his lifelong suspicion that knowledge advances by suppressing inconvenient evidence. This book is recommended for readers interested in the history of skepticism, fringe science, speculative cosmology, and modernist experiments in nonfiction prose. It is less a manual of answers than an intellectual disturbance, inviting readers to examine how facts are authorized, dismissed, or made strange.
